Last week, TechCrunch reported that Elsevier, the multi-billion dollar publishing company, is in advanced talks to buy Mendeley, the free reference manager and academic social network site. Given Elsevier’s less-than-trusted standing in the research community, questions are being asked of what this might mean for research communication, measurement, and commodification. Roderic Page weighs in on his thoughts of what the future may hold. Une analyse des possibles conséquences d'un rachat du logiciel de gestion des références bibliographiques Mendeley par l'éditeur scientifique Elsevier : ce dernier gagnerait une puissance de frappe incroyable, avec, par exemple, un outil de mesure des citations et donc de notoriété des articles particulièrement efficace, et la possibilité de vendre des articles scientifiques directement aux chercheurs via l'interface de leur outil de gestion.

Elsevier and its 100M dollar bid for Mendeley. Altmetrics making its way into the system? Or an academic publishing behemoth trying to make a path into the same social ecosystem that is challenging its business model?
