One thing is for sure, social media is here to stay. Never before have people been able to connect, share, and learn from one another as we do now. I can only imagine what might be next! As a result, our students need skills to win at life in a digital world. The ability to use social media to support life goals and possibilities can be a game-changer. I know it has been very powerful for me in my professional life.
Although this was published almost 10 years ago, the information found in this article still remains true. With social media continuing to be on the rise, it is time that we embrace it. I really enjoy the idea of utilizing social media to connect with experts rather than depend on textbooks (point #7).

These are compelling reasons to practice social media in schools as it helps engage parents, the community, and the world. Teaching digital citizenship is another key aspect of responsible use of social media for students and parents!
It's critical for education stakeholders to explore the opportunities to invest in social media integration for learning.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
I really like that they got the opinion of school leaders to discuss the findings that happened in part one of the research (link is embedded to part one in article). Several of the participants make a good point about meeting students where they are. Majority of students will have social media accounts by the time they reach high school. Many of them may already be starting to use social media to obtain information, like stated in the article. It is important that we meet students where they are and give them the necessary tools that will help them utilize social media for its full learning potential. This article also talked about not only trying to get teachers to buy into the prospect, but parents as well. I think it would be great to get a meeting set up with parents where questions could be answered.

Diamond Garcia's insight:
This is another great article where it highlights the pros and cons of implementing social media into schools, but it also gives really good examples and how that would benefit either the school itself or students or both. One idea that was mentioned in the article is utilizing instragram as a photo essay. This could be done as an extension to students work or a way to get students creative.
Along with "reading, writing and arithmetic," the social media 3Rs could perhaps include "research, responsibility and respect."
Diamond Garcia's insight:
I like that in this article, it suggests that teaching the fundamentals of social media could be the second set of "3 r's" that are taught. The social media R's could be: responsibility, research and respect. I do think it is first the parent's role and responsibility to teach their children how to navigate the digital world. However, if we were to implement the usage of social media into schools, as educators we have a responsibility as well to reaffirm what is being taught. On the flipside, I think it would be interesting to see reports on the study of how much time students are spending on social media sights and what affects it has.
Education has seen tremendous change in the 21st century, with social media platforms becoming a necessary component of learning environments. These platforms, which were once used for private correspondence, now improve education through virtual contact.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
With today's students, they are so immersed in technology and social media that it is practically engrained in them. I like how this article suggests that utilizing X (formally Twitter) to poll students in order to get them involved in decision making. This gives the students a sense of taking control of their own learning, which can also help lead into personalized learning paths. The article also discusses how including social media into education can help bridge the gab between theory and practice. As someone who thinks that giving students a chance to actually apply what they learned, this is great to read about!
I found a link to this PDF published from The U.S. Department of Education while looking for articles. It goes into depth about how students can use social media in order to participate in online discussions. I like the suggestion of a teacher creating a hashtag and when students want to share their thoughts over the topic, they would include the hashtag so others could find and join in on the discussion. I also hadn't thought about using Moodle or Edmodo on the off chance that a school district has blocked Twitter.
The thoughtful use of social media in the classroom is an excellent way to create a modern and engaging learning environment.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
I love that this article talks about the benefits of including social media into the classroom as well as give strategies on how to do so. I think when teachers talk about bringing social media into the classroom, they really are on board with it, until they get stuck on the "how to" part. The strategies that are given here are also not requiring teachers to do a complete 180. It is just simply moving what teachers already do into the digital world.
Defying the general notion of wasting time online, most students find interesting ways to make their academic careers better. Still, the claims seem fake? Here is a quick fact check of the details that would help you understand the students perspective better.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
It's a short video, but it brings to light how to use different social media and in what ways it could benefit students. I hadn't thought about LinkedIn until watching this video. I think it's important for students to understand how to use social media apps, such as LinkedIn, in order to start networking. The first group of students who come to mind are First Generation students. They would need guidance on how to do so, and as educators its our job to support the student in all ways.

Diamond Garcia's insight:
This editorial gives great insight into several experiments that were conducted in order to see if using social media was truly affective, and the results were almost always yes. One of the experiments focused on using social media to help improve English speaking skills in bilingual/english language learners. The results from this specific experiment showed that the "flipped classroom" (social media) influenced the learners self-efficacy. Since Texas has a vast amount of English Language Learners, this is a great editorial to read to understand how to implement social media in order to get the best results.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Social Media in Education October 15, 2011 Mark Connolly Every day, about 250 million people log in to Facebook. Twitter has 15 million regular users; they send 65 million messages each day. People watch more than two billion video clips on YouTube daily.

I hadn't thought about social media that the rapidly shifting that occurs with social media scrolling can weaken student's ability to control their attention span. I think that's something that should be heavily considered.

The use of social media in the education environment presents myriad challenges. We outline potential concerns and offer recommendations for educators, school districts, and state and local union affiliates.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
I think this article does a great job at highlighting potential concerns with integrating social media in the classroom. Although there are many benefits, I think it is important to look at the potential negatives as well.
Harry discusses how the study of Social Media can help us better understand how youth are acting and interacting both online and offline, how young people adeptly navigate a growing and increasingly diverse assortment of social media, and how we can (and must) incorporate and account for social media in the classroom. Against the many calls and social panics insisting that we tell children to ‘disconnect’ from technology.
Harry calls for an acceptance of the reality of Social Media and the inextricably enmeshed nature of the online and offline. He highlights the increasingly important and positive role it plays in young people’s lives, how we can better understand Social Media and young people’s relationship with it, and how we can incorporate and utilise their Social Media skills in education.
Harry is a Digital Sociologist at the University of East Anglia, who achieved a scholarship to complete his Masters in Social Science Research Methods. He was then granted scholarship funding for his ongoing PhD under the supervision of Professor Victoria Carrington. His research focuses upon identity formation and performance in online Social Networking Sites. Using Actor-Network Theory along with ideas drawn from multi-disciplinary backgrounds such as Comic Book Studies, his research aims to explore how technology and site design can shape and affect the creation and maintenance of identities across a wide range of technologies and Social Networking Sites.

Diamond Garcia's insight:
This TedTalk provides a great balanced perspective on incorporating social media into the classroom. Harry makes a point that I hadn't thought of: how using different forms of media can affect the type of personality that we allow to show.
I really like this article because it gives great ideas on how we can incorporate social media into the classroom. It also gives fun project ideas that would help enhance student engagement. This allows helps foster creativity, collaboration and even digital literacy.
This PDF would make a great guideline on how to begin to implement social media into high school classes, specifically when building the course and the syllabus. I like how it specifically gives the tip in using "contracts" for students in order to get written permission. This is a great way to keep students accountable and have parents understand that while they are using social media, there will be consequences if there are misconducts that occur. Also, understanding the terms of service for each platform that will be used. I know many of us forgo this in our own personal accounts, but this is something that we really should go through with a fine tooth comb since it will involve students.
Guidelines on the right way for students 12 and younger to conduct themselves online.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
In the two districts that I have worked at, I have not seen guidelines sent out that are written for students 12 years and younger. I think what the NYC public school system did was a wonderful idea to implement! If we are going to be open to the idea of bringing social media into the classroom, then we have to think about the younger grades and what guidelines should be put in place for them. I know high school students have a better grasp on the ins and outs of social media etiquette, and this would be a great idea to create guidelines for the older students, but the fact that they included younger students really speaks to how much they are trying to make it work.
This session walked superintendents through both the positive and negative effects of social media on high school students, attesting to the community social media provides, as well as the importance of protecting students. This story was produced by Lyla Kelley at the 2024 AASA National Conference on Education in San Diego, Calif.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
This video, although a short clip, touches on important topics such as implementing short form content to engage students. I enjoyed that these were a group of superintendents that were apart of the discussion about the positives and negatives of embracing social media in the classroom. It seems as if they also included different scenarios to talk about. Nick Polyak points out that when a student or a group of students mess up, the response to that, most of the time, is to shut it all down. Although I understand this point, I think it is important that the reactions to misuse of social media are not going to affect all students. I believe that is a great time to reteach the importance of using social media correctly.
List of Disadvantages of Social Media: here is a list of potential risk and disadvantages of social media for students and general people.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
When educators enter the discussion about whether or not to include social media in the classroom, I think it's important that we don't shy away from the negatives and potential dangers. When reading the article, it made several good points about different negatives that this may have, however one caught my attention. There is a chance that social media can spread misinformation and false news, which can be confusing for students. We've seen how false news can affect public opinion. We must take the time to thoroughly teach students how to verify information to be coming from reliable sources.
Learn how to keep personal information confidential on social media.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
When discussing implementing social media into the classroom, one of the most important things we need to discuss, and be trained on, is how to keep students safe while doing so. This article by Common Sense Media provides a checklist of sorts on how to ensure that. As educators we want to keep up with the evolving world, including the digital world, but we also have to be mindful of how students are interacting with social media. This also teaches students digital literacy and how to avoid oversharing or leaking their private information on the internet.
A lot of contemporary Teachers have witnessed the advantages of integrating Social Media channels as modes of learning in their Classrooms.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
Within this article is an infographic that showcased 10 different ways to use social media for teaching. Within my research I've seen a lot of articles talking about using X, Facebook, and even Instagram. This is the first article that I've come across that has suggested using blogging websites for students to enhance their writing skill. As an elementary teacher, I see how hard writing has been for students and how repetitive it can be when using curriculum where students are not buying into it. I think implementing a blog for students to write and go back and reflect on previous writing is a great way to engage students.
Through hashtags like #edtechchat, educators can discuss a variety of hot topics, seek advice, share best practices, and build connections with peers across the nation and beyond.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
Although the article is a little dated and the application is now called "X", this article really does put a focus on how to properly utilize Twitter in order to reap the full benefits as a teacher. I think this, along with joining groups on Facebook, is a great example at how a teacher can continue to polish their craft, and learning that is done outside of work. With this specific article, we are focusing on using social media in order to help us grow professionally. I think it's great when teachers join online communities and use it as a way to receive and give support.
Explore how social media influences education and learning outcomes, from engagement to distraction, examining its positive &negative impacts.
Diamond Garcia's insight:
This article highlights 4 positives and 4 negatives of students utilizing social media. However, I think the positives outweigh the good. Especially when the article mentions that parents and teachers should work together to help build a student's digital literacy. As we know that saying "it takes a village", it truly does when building the leaders of tomorrow. However, by understanding the negatives and the possible consequences, we could still implement it while doing the best to avoid the risks.
Social media can help achieve better parental engagement. That's one of the key benefits of social media in school. But what else?

Within this article, I like that it gives an example on how to use social media to promote schools. I think this is a great way to get parents and the community actively involved with what's going on in the schools.

Embracing technology, especially social media, in the classroom has a lot of benefits. It is already something a majority of us are implementing in our lives.
