Full 30-minute interview - On the same day Edmonton's Mayor Don Iveson was awarded a national Clean 50 Award and city council passed its landmark international lauded 1.5-degree Energy Transition Plan. We sit down with Mayor Don Iveson to talk about what it will take for a City like Edmonton to reduce its emissions, diversify the economy and build a sustainable economy in Edmonton. "We need to aim for 1.5 [degrees]. We need to look at what it would take to get to 1.5. And it's a steeper climb or actually a steeper descent, carbon wise on the graphs to do our part to limit to 1.5 degrees - it's going to be tough." "We're we're talking about reductions from 19 tons per capita to three tons per capita within the next several years, and on a course to people are talking about net zero by 2050. That [00:03:03] We're we're talking about reductions from, you know, 19 tons per capita to three tons per capita, uh, within the next, uh, uh, several years. And on a course – people are talking about net zero by 2050." Edmonton's updated plan addresses pretty much everything: transportation, buildings, industry and energy. The good news is the tide appears to be turning, but as the Mayor says it's a really big job to reduce emissions and transition and that the cities success depends on it.
