Introducing Scratch 3.0: Expanding the Creative Possibilities of Coding - Medium | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Over the past decade, millions of kids around the world have used Scratch to code their own interactive games, stories, animations, and more. This outpouring of creativity inspires us to continue to extend and improve Scratch, so that kids everywhere have new opportunities to express themselves creatively with new technologies.

Today, we’re launching Scratch 3.0, a new generation of Scratch that expands how, what, and where kids can create with code. As we’ve tested prototypes of Scratch 3.0, we’ve been amazed by the projects that kids have made — like a hedgehog that speaks French, a hippopotamus that dances to hip-hop, and a soccer game you control with your shoe.

Need Creative Inspiration? Do Something Boring

Need Creative Inspiration? Do Something Boring | KILUVU | Scoop.it

Doctors use the “universal pain assessment tool” to measure how uncomfortable their patients are. It’s a simple mechanism made up of smiley (and sad) faces. At one end of the spectrum is “pain free,” and on the other is “unimaginable, unspeakable pain,” with “tolerable” and “utterly horrible” falling in between. It’s not terribly scientific, but the tool helps medical professionals download your pain data from a little chip in your brain, so to speak, making it one of the best and fastest assessments at doctors’ disposal.

It’s not just pain that’s difficult to quantify–so is the human experience generally. But researchers have devised tools to study other mushy concepts, too, including creativity. And in the process we’ve learned there’s at least one thing that tends to nudge people into measurably more creative thinking: boredom.

Cutting out distractions doesn’t just clear space to focus. As author and podcaster Manoush Zomorodi explains, it can also lead to boredom-induced creativity.

CCM Consultancy's curator insight, November 6, 2017 12:56 AM

Participants were asked to leave their phones out of sight while in transit, including ignoring any impulse to walk and text, etc... This helped clear their minds for creative ideas. So the next time you’re getting coffee, as you slowly make your way to the front of the queue, just let your mind wander instead of scrolling Instagram or checking email.

PLUMA track bike sculpts feather-light frame into elegant curves

PLUMA track bike sculpts feather-light frame into elegant curves | KILUVU | Scoop.it

Titled after the portuguese word for feather, the ‘PLUMA’ track bike lives up to its namesake with a lightweight body and elegant shape. designed by Nuno Teixeira industrial design, the ‘PLUMA’ concept was dreamt up back in 2010, and after one year in production the first prototype is ready to hit the track. With a carbon sandwich and AIREX R63.80 PCV foam frame, the pluma bike sports a curvy physique to help air flow along the bike’s body.

The streamlined bicycle aims to be feather soft as well as feather light, reducing the number of exposed moving parts and tubes to prevent injury to the rider in case of a fall. with a PRO track carbon disk rear wheel to minimize drag, and a PRO 5 spoke carbon track wheel at the front, the curvy ride carries no unnecessary weight. like the majority of professional velodrome track bikes, PLUMA is a fixed-gear model, and comes without breaks. Nuno Teixeira industrial design’s elegant bicycle has been taken from render to reality by constellation composite, specialists in turning concept transport designs into working physical pieces....

The Use of Shapes in Web Design with 30 Examples - Onextrapixel

The Use of Shapes in Web Design with 30 Examples - Onextrapixel | KILUVU | Scoop.it

Have you noticed that most websites are, more or less, made up of rectangular boxes? From the rectangular shape of a browser window to the rectangular shape of buttons, websites are mostly rectangular.

This is not only practical, it just makes sense. However, that doesn’t mean there is not room for other shapes like circles, triangles, or made up miscellaneous curvatures.

I’ve gathered 30 different websites that use different shapes for different purposes. Some of them use random assortments of shape for decorations – like Roadmap –  others completely redefine the structure of a web page – like Timetable Records....

7 skills your child needs to survive the changing world of work | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | KILUVU | Scoop.it

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

3. Agility and adaptability

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

5. Effective oral and written communication

6. Accessing and analysing information

What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

50 Gorgeous Color Schemes From Award-Winning Websites

50 Gorgeous Color Schemes From Award-Winning Websites | KILUVU | Scoop.it

Color is such a fundamental part of the way we perceive the world that we often take it for granted. Think about it: From the youthful and vivid orange on someone’s attire to the gray and gloomy sky above us, colors have the power to mold our perceptions of others and even the circumstances we find ourselves in.

This is why one of the most powerful tools in a designer’s arsenal is color. It can either make or break a design; it can be the determining factor in engaging viewers or sending them promptly on their way.

As a non-designer, I often find it difficult to find just the right colors for my amateur projects. Whether I’m creating a simple image to support my content or more elaborate projects such as a slide deck or infographic, I frequently spend a good amount of time looking for the perfect color scheme. I ask myself questions like: Do I want my design to be inviting? Provocative and bold? Or intelligent and elegant?

Unless you’re a seasoned designer, it takes time and effort to find a color combination that works, which is why the design team at Visme decided to provide our users with a handy list of beautiful color schemes from websites that have been recognized by Awwwards, the most prestigious award for Web designers and developers....

Why Making Is Essential to Learning | #LEARNingByDoing #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Creativity | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Research shows that hands-on learning is an effective way to teach students science. A 2009 study found that eighth-grade students who were involved in hands-on science projects demonstrated a deeper understanding of concepts than students who were taught with traditional methods such as textbook readings, lectures, and tests (Riskowski et al., 2009).

Why is hands-on learning effective? We can look to neuroscience for insight. Students who participate in science experiments, instead of just observing them, have a deeper conceptual understanding of science. Through brain imaging, researchers found that physical experience activates the sensorimotor region of students' brains, which helps reinforce what they're learning (Kontra et al., 2015).

If students use their hands as well as their minds, they're essentially learning twice.

These Curious Billboards in California Show the Exact Natural Landscapes Behind Them

These Curious Billboards in California Show the Exact Natural Landscapes Behind Them | KILUVU | Scoop.it

An artist in California is replacing garish billboard ads with nature photos that blend almost perfectly into the surrounding landscapes—because they show the landscapes themselves.

Jennifer Bolande’s “Visible Distance/Second Sight” is gracing roadside scenes along Gene Autry Trail and Vista Chino in Palm Springs, California. When a viewer sees the outdoor posters from the right perspective, the large-scale images of the mountains in the distance align with the actual ranges, creating a striking juxtaposition of the virtual image and the real one.

Part of a broader “Desert X” exhibition in the area, it’s meant to redirect attention from the advertisement to the natural world depicted in it. It’s been done before, to a degree. As we pointed out in 2015, artist Brian Kane’s work in Massachusetts used trees and stars to similar effect....
