Firms producing large volumes of waste could find themselves footing the bill if they do not find sustainable solutions to global waste crisis, a report warned. Research conducted by Verisk Maplecroft found over 2.1bn tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) is generated globally each year, but only 16% (323m tonnes) is recycled while almost half (46%) of waste is disposed of unsustainably. Giant Food stores is moving straight towards its zero waste goal through its dedication towards becoming one of the most environmentally friendly grocers in the U.S. As part of its sustainable retailer commitment, the company announced that it's Cleona, PA store located at 481 West Penn Ave., is the first in the chain to reach zero waste. A recognized definition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, zero waste means 90 percent or more of a store’s total waste is being diverted from a landfill or incineration. Currently, 77 percent of all waste generated by its stores is diverted through recycling and composting. Via EcoVadis

Great job Giant Food Store! Countries often don’t have the infrastructure required to ethically or efficiently handle waste recycling, leading to a buildup of harmful chemicals that affect populations near dumping sites

Frappés par l’enthousiasme des participants à la fin de ces trois jours intensifs de débats, d’ateliers et de conférences, nous nous sommes dit : « il faut faire ça tous les jours ! ». C’est ainsi qu’est né le pari d’ouvrir le premier lieu entièrement consacré aux démarches Zero Waste et à leur mise en œuvre, à tous les niveaux : individuel, territorial, entrepreneurial. Global waste could grow by 70 percent by 2050 as urbanisation and populations rise, said the World Bank on Thursday, with South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa set to generate the biggest increase in rubbish. Countries could reap economic and environmental benefits by better collecting, recycling and disposing of trash, according to a report, which calculated that a third of the world's waste is instead dumped openly, with no treatment. Tackling environmental pollution is no easy task, especially in developing countries where environmental laws and regulations are not strictly enforced. In the absence of a strong legal framework, companies have an even greater responsibility to ensure that they adopt a proactive approach within a comprehensive environmental management system that encompasses all stakeholders.

La Chine vient d'annoncer l'interdiction, dès la fin de l'année 2017, de l'importation de 24 types de déchets européens. En cause : la protection des "intérêts environnementaux de la Chine et la santé des gens". Un coup dur pour les entreprises de recyclage, notamment les françaises qui exportent chaque année 9 millions de tonnes de plastiques vers la Chine.
