Companies need to “step-up” to meet SDGs | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it
Companies need to set more ambitious targets to achieve Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, United Nations Global Compact report shows.
The United Nations Global Compact, in partnership with DNV GL, has released a new report looking back on 20 years of corporate sustainability progress among its business participants.

The UN Global Compact 20th-Anniversary Progress Report: Uniting Business in the Decade of Action uses data from its annual survey of participants supported by interviews with participants from around the world.

A review on progress made in embedding the Ten Principles into their operations and contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was conducted as part of the research.

2020s declared #decade of action on #climate, #biodiversity and #SDGs  | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

Climate Week New York saw companies form new coalitions to accelerate progress, such as the Business Avengers to champion the Global Goals and the One Planet Business for Biodiversity platform, while Climate Group’s RE100 passed the 200-member mark. Seventeen global companies, including Mars Inc, Diageo, SAP, Salesforce and Unilever, have joined forces under a new coalition called the Business Avengers to throw their weight behind the Sustainable Development Goals. Each company in the campaign, which was launched at Climate Week New York this week, has elected to represent one goal, with Mars, for example, promoting SDG1 on poverty, drinks giant Diageo championing SDG6 for clean water and sanitation, and Google sponsoring SDG8 for decent work and economic growth.  Barry Parkin, chief sustainability and procurement officer for Mars, told Ethical Corporation that with 50-100 million smallholders connected to global supply chains, companies have a big role to play in poverty-alleviation.

All foodservice and hospitality companies with over 250 employees should have a food waste target in place and be measuring, reporting and taking action on food waste by 2026, according to a new industry action plan. Developed by WRAP, the Hospitality and Food Service (HaFS) sector Action Plan defines the steps companies must take to help to deliver the UK Food Waste Reduction Roadmap which sets out how the largest retailers, suppliers, and hospitality and food service companies will contribute towards the SDG 12.3 target of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030.

The UK is a global leader in measuring food waste and supporting international food waste prevention projects, since it has been found that hundreds of thousands of tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry every year.

The SDG 12.3:  “By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses”
