#Circular #economy 'fundamental' for net zero by 2050 | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

A circular economy approach is required in combination with renewable energy to meet net-zero emissions by 2050, according to a report. Renewable energy is able to account for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, but the remaining 45%, generated by manufacturing everyday consumables, is being “overlooked”, said the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF).

@Walmart's 2018 #CSR #report: 20mn tonne reduction in emissions, sustainable sourcing and more | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

US grocery giant Walmart has managed to reduce emissions throughout its supply chain by 20mn tonnes in a year, according to its latest report.  Walmart, which is currently the largest retailer in the world, states that suppliers reduced their collective greenhouse gas emissions by over 20mn tonnes in 2017. The company announced a series of sustainability goals in 2016 and has said it aims to cut supply chain emission by 1bn tonnes by 2030. 400 of the company’s global suppliers made commitments to reduce their emissions as part of Walmart’s Project Gigaton. The suppliers have utilised an “emissions reduction toolkit” produced by WWF which details steps to take to cut emissions including in manufacturing, materials and product use.

Bravo Walmart for the sustainable achievements. Whether it involves carbon emissions, waste management, electricity consumption, or other business activities impacting environmental aspects, eco-innovation can provide a great path for easier, more widespread, cost-effective ways to minimize companies’ environmental footprint.

La #Finlande veut que l'#UE approuve un #plan visant à réduire son empreinte carbone à zéro net | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

Finland wants the European Union to agree to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050, Environment Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen said on Monday as the bloc's ministers met to discuss a climate protection plan. Finland, which will take over the EU's rotating presidency in the second half of 2019, has called for leadership in combating climate change after U.S. President Donald Trump decided to pull out of the global Paris deal. The EU executive proposed last year that the bloc aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
